Spring 2025
Huntley Project High School is pleased to offer Driver's Education throughout the school year and during the summer. Although Traffic Education is not a school requirement, it is a Montanan Motor Vehicle Division requirement for students who wish to obtain their driver's license before age 16. The HPHS Drivers Education program strives to provide teen drivers with a foundation to instill safety, caution, and a basic understanding of driving laws. Like any other learned skill, driving takes hours and hours of practice. Driver education provides a base of skills and knowledge students build by practicing with their parents to become proficient drivers. The HPHS Drivers Education Program consists of at least 60 hours of structured learning experiences. At least 6 hours will be behind the wheel and 6 hours will be in-car observation of another driver. The driving hours are outside of class time.
Spring Session - March 3, 2025, April 30, 2025
All dates are subject to change.
Students must be 14 1/2 years old by March 3, 2025, and currently be in grades 9-12.
Class Times: The schedule will be sent out at the parent meeting. The course begins at 7:00 a.m. on days there is a school session, at 8:00 a.m. on Fridays when there is no regular school, and at 8:00 a.m. on Saturdays.
Drivers' Students are allowed up to 3 hours of classroom absences, but those absences must be made up at a time scheduled by the instructor. Students who miss more than 3 hours or fail to attend the make-up class do not pass the entire course.
Attendance during the first six days of class is mandatory. The first day of class is March 3rd at 7:00 am in the high school computer lab. Students will be dropped if they don't show up on the first and subsequent five days. Students must show up for their scheduled driving times.
To register for the Spring session, students in grades 9-12 will fill out an application/permission form starting January 2nd and turn it in to Cece in the Central Office no later than February 3rd, along with the fee of $200.00. (Applications and money will not be accepted after February 3rd.)
The course fee is non-refundable after the first week.
Students will need a copy of their birth certificate and social security card during the first week of class. I need one parent's signature on the DMV driver's license application. This can be done at the mandatory parent meeting on March 3rd, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the high school computer lab.
We are participating in the Cooperative Driving Testing Program with the Montana Department of Justice, Motor Vehicle Division. This program allows me to administer written and driving tests for students. This will also allow your son/daughter to acquire a (TELL), Traffic Education Learners License (legally driving with a parent) while enrolled in Traffic Education. YIPPEE, something new these last couple of years regarding the TELL. In the past, students could only drive with a parent or legal guardian, but now, after receiving their TELL, students can drive with anyone 18 or older, but of course, with parental permission.
I will give the (DOJ) Department of Justice written rules test twice. Students must score at least 82% on the knowledge test. The first test will be on Tuesday, April 1st. If the first is not passed, a second test will be given on Wednesday, April 3rd. If both tests are not passed, students will have to take the test in Billings after the Driver's Education Program is over.
Six months from the first day of the Driver's Education Class, students can get their restricted permit, which allows them to drive alone. A pamphlet explaining all the details will be handed out. I will be accepting 20 students for the Spring Session. The first 20 students to turn in their application/permission form with the fee of $200.00 will be enrolled. I will inform students on February 4th if they are enrolled.
